He agonized over his political pronouncements in a way that the more brilliant, mercurial, doctrinaire Sartre never had to. Adorno, wrote letters to the UCSD department chair in favor of Herbert Marcuse. Many famous philosophers, including J.-P. Here, Sartre echoes Machiavelli. Sartre, formerly his close friend, mocked Camus's “beautiful soul.” Camus's complaint does him credit. Each of us necessarily plays God to others; each of us, as the author of the play of his own life, necessarily reduces others to characters in his drama. After Beauvoir's death, Sartre's adopted daughter and literary heir Arlette Elkaïm would not let many of Sartre's letters be published in unedited form. Music plays an important role in Jean-Paul Sartre's existential archetype, La Nausée (1938). This book is a wonderful, naturalistic feat of reverse engineering – from letters, books and interviews to lives. Sartre was right — he was a “gaping wound,” as the abject, beseeching letters he wrote to his mother make all too clear. Although we do not gain a detailed understanding of his reading of Heidegger in these letters, we do see how central Heidegger was to Sartre's development.
